Default HELP !! me find the problem

My bike was originally an '02 Heritage Springer rebuilt in 2010 with a 96 cu in motor and Baker 6 speed. I need to find an annoying problem.

On starting and riding from cold, there is a LOUD squeek coming from the front, lower part of the bike every time the throttle is closed (ie on the overrun). This squeek will go away if the throttle is opened or the clutch is pulled in. The noise will disappear after approx. 5-6 mi of riding. It will also go away for a couple of days after riding approx. 25 miles of freeway riding. It is not speed sensitive or gear sensitive. Under normal riding and changing gear, the squeek occurs just as the clutch is re-engaged after the gear change

So far I have changed the thrust bearing, engine oil and primary fluid.

Its driving me crazy. Please help with suggestions and prevent me not running into something half hanging off the bike listening for the noise.

From what I remember, this used to happen when the belt drive was too tight. Might check it out...

Good luck,

Default Thanks Jack

Jack You hit the nail on the head. I never imagined the noise was coming from the belt as it sounded much further forward. I applied some silicone to the belt and the noise disappeared. I have now scheduled replacement.

Thanks for your help !

Cool, glad to help. Unless you have a lot of miles on your bike, you probably don't need to replace the belt, just set the tension properly per the service manual.

That. Squeaking can also be caused by misalignment of the pulleys or wheels, as well as a dirty belt. My guess is a slight misalignment, or the tension issue.

Unless your belt is really thrashed there is no need to shell out for a new one. It's a bit laborious on the Big Twins and will cost you a fair share if you pay someone to do it.
