Default DIY- Learn something

Ok, so i went to the dealer today. I have 47k miles. I bought the bike with 40k. Not sure the maintenance that was done by the previous owner. I've just checked the fluids, changed the oil regularly, kept the bike up as best as I know how, etc. The dealer "recommends" a 50k mile service. I generally like doing things myself for a couple reasons. 1) Save cash 2) learn more about my bike. So for the hell of it I go to the service dept and asked them about the 50K mile service. The guy went over a few things they do then quoted me $379 like it was nothing. That was just to check it. If anything needed to be done, or if they "found" anything the cost was tacked on to that. So I'm thinking I could easily rack up a $1000 bill before I leave. On the way home I thought, I can do this myself. I have a service manual, the required tools, and kinda know what I'm doing. The rest I'll refer to my manual and the forum. My question is, anyone know the checklist of things they look at during the 50k mile service? Anything I need to know that's not covered in a service manual when performing this maintenance? And any other recommendations that you guys think wouldn't hurt to check out lets hear it... Thanks

A member here recently made a maintenance checklist in Excel which he invited everyone on here to download. It's only been within the last week, so it should be easy enough to find. I believe it was posted in the general section. Normally, I'd just find it for you and post a link, but I'm on a mobile device, so I'll let you (or someone else) do it. BTW, the dealer charges those prices because the average H-D rider of today just doesn't work on their own bike and will pay mega bucks to have someone else do it. Not saying it's a bad thing. Just the way it is...

Should be a checklist of stuff to be done. Haven't really looked too hard, but I think I've paged past it looking for something else. Definitely look at cam chain tensioners if they haven't been done.

Cut the filter open and look for orange plastic pieces.

That log is pretty cool thanks for posting the link. It's pretty much like looking at the table of contents in the service manual though.

Good idea, to do everything, when I got my Lux, it only had 7k on it but I did a 20k service, which swaps all the fluids, oil, brakes, forks etc
