Fatboy tank question....
Hey guys,
New to the Forum, I don't know if this question has been asked before, but I spent half the morning searching with no luck. Can a gas tank for a 00 fatboy (carb) be modified to use on a 99? I have a chance to buy a set of tins that were taken off when the bike was purchased new to have custom tins and paint applied. I can purchase the tin set cheaper than I can have my 99 painted for. I was hoping someone has preformed this mod before, and can shed a little light on the situation. Thanks for any help.

I am sure that you could modify the tank mounts somehow, but it would require you stripping the paint off and doing major sheetmetal reconstruction. The early tanks are bolted together down the middle of the tanks, while the later one-piece tanks are bolted at the tail end. It would take some serious desire to make a newer tank fit on a later bike.
As I'm sure you know, the 99 and earlier Softails use two piece flat side tanks, while the '00 and up us one piece tanks. So its not just the tanks that are different, you would also need the speedo, dash and mounts. Just as a point in question, I think the rear fender mounts are different from 99-2000 as well, but you could find that out pretty easy. If thats the case you would be pretty much upside down trying to fit the stuff versus getting your stuff painted. Just for the record, how much are we talking? Because there are plenty of painters on ebay who do very nice custom work for well under a grand.

Thanks Big H, and bikerlaw,
I knew that tanks were diffrent, I was hoping that it was a swap that had been done before or that it could be done. I can get the complet tin set for $550.00 in new condition were taken off at the dealer boxed up, and stored in a tempature controled garage. The quotes I got for paint range from $800.00 - $1300.00. So you can see why I was hoping to be able to pull this off. Even with the extra expense of buying the speedo, dash, mounts, and rewiring the lighting indicators I still would come out to the good having factory paint. Not to mention selling my tins that are in good condition, PO just didn't take care of the paint like he should have.
Thanks, again.
