Question Deluxe Starter Removal and Replacement - 2007 Deluxe

I thought I'd replace the starter in my '07 Deluxe by myself and ran into a problem that my non-Harley manual doesn't mention. I disassembled the bike to the point where I could finally access the starter and removed the 2 bolts and the solenoid wire but there seems to be something holding it from behind in the primary case. I see that there's a groove on the replacement starter on the nose section near the gear so I'm sure that's what I need to get at.

Anyone here know what I need to do? Do I have to take the whole primary case off to get at it? What was Harley thinking??

I was hoping to get it all back together for a big event in Vermont this coming weekend.

Thanks again,
Phil

the 2002 book says to pull the primary cover, bend the tab for the jackshaft bolt back and remove the bolt, then remove the starter. the jack shaft coupler comes out with the starter.

Thanks for the response DDeuce. I went back to the bike and gave it another try. It turns out that it was just stuck on an O-ring. That's what the groove I spoke of on the starter is for. I gave it a harder yank and it came out.
I had to tear a good chunk of the bike apart to get at the starter. Bigger job than I thought. The whole exhaust, the oil tank, fender extension to get at the tank.
Wish I didn't take the primary cover off. It's the second time this season that new fluid is going in there. LOL And I wish I had a nice exhaust to go back on it since I have it off. Oh well, live and learn.

Thanks again.

Phil

Good to here, should be ready for the event. I put the factory FXST duals on mine so I only have to pull one pipe to mess with anything back there, change tire etc. Got them at a low cost off eBay, like new. No shoe melt by the passenger peg either. Didn't care for the shotgun pipes.

Great idea. I have to go to the Harley dealer tomorrow to get exhaust gaskets so maybe I'll check to see what exhausts they have in stock too!

I ended up installing this starter off of Ebay,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/STARTER-MOTO...06%26rk%3D1%26

I noticed an immediate improvement on how the engine turned over with this unit compared to the original. The only thing I didn't keep was a breather on the solenoid. I took it off and sealed it with permatex. The original had no breather hole and I was afraid of moisture getting in it.
I just hope it lasts as long as I own the bike.
