Default Switch Cap removal tool? needed?

Hey guys,

just bought and had them mailed to my home the chrome switch cap kit (p/n 71804-03). I will be installing them on Sunday afternoon. Looked over the instructions and it referred to a switch cap removal tool??? why didn't harley send this tool with the kit?? Is it needed or can i use something else? I just opened up the package to realize i just paid for plastic that is chromed in appearance. To say the least i am not impressed with the quailty of these switch caps.

Some guys have mentioned that a lot of guys break a cap or two during the install. Trying to avoid doing this. Any pointers that can save me another trip to the dealer would be appreciated.

Thanks alot in advance for any help...I wouldn't think this to be too difficult since i just installed BC thunder Baffles on a set of V/H Bigshot longs today and fought with H/Shield clamps till i almost blew a gasket --hahaha--but hey they are in and sound ---BAD-A$$....

Use a very small flat screwdriver and pry them off in the direction specified. Take your time and you should have no problems. The first one is always the hardest.

Also, be extremely careful when swapping these switches...one little pinch can make/break an electrical connection on your bars & then it's a crap shoot as to where to fix.

Some people have said that putting the caps in hot water, maybe even boiling, will soften them up some and give some flexibility to get them on the switches themselves.

Don't be discouraged, and be patient. The springs in some of the caps (starter, horn, signals) are really easy to manipulate.

Yep. I broke a couple. Getting them off isn't the problem, putting the chromes one on is. They are not as flexible as the stock black plastic caps. You don't need boiling water, but a large coffee cup of hot water from the microwave will work. Put the cap in there an let it sit for a minute or so. Then try to put it on gently. It will cool again rather quickly so you may have to put it back in the water if you don't get it on first try.

Had to Share--it took about 20-30 min(and only One Cold BEER) to do this first side and wanted to show photos of the work done. Pretty simple job but some have said it was tremendously tedious work...Just remember your orientation of the springs and your good to go

Here is another photo of Start and Run part of the Switch. I am leaving them un-assembled right now cause on Tuesday my New CHROME switch housing will be here and i can complete the whole look. Some have said hot or boiling water helped...i cant really say --i think alot of it had to do with the fact you just have to be patient and take your time and use those small tools..

and AH BEER !!!

I will try and post pics of the other side from beginning of the breakdown of the switch to the end.
