On my 2006 night train I have experience trouble with shifting up and down where the shifter gets stuck and does not return to the position between gears. I can lift the shifter to get it in position to change gears. Any advice on what to lube and where to solve this problem? I don't have a service manual yet so any pictures to show locations to lube would be great.
The pivot shaft that the shift lever is attached to most likely has sand or some type of road grime in it. Just have to remove the shift lever and the front of the shift linkage and the pivot will slide out. Clean and lightly grease the shaft, clean the hole the pivot shaft fits through and reinstall. All should be good.

+1 and while you are at it clean and lube the connections on the shift linkage too.
I put a couple drops of oil on the shaft where it goes through the frame on both sides of the bushing every time I do the oils after I found out what caused it.
May have to remove Ur two shifters (front and rear) and clean it and re oil it the first time.. sometimes others have reported rust in there..
Some have even taken it all apart drilled a hole and tapped it then put a grease zirk in the frame housing.
There are a couple plastic sleeve bushings in the frame where the shift pedal shaft goes through. Check them for wear also, they are replaceable if worn out.
I had the same problem on my '05 as well. As the others have mentioned, this does happen more often than one would expext. For me, oiling it was not enough. I had to pull it apart, clean everything and wire wheel the shaft. Grease it and put it all back together. Its a simple job. You can do it from start to finish in 30 min or less.
