Default stage 2

want to get the wifes bike , 04 Heritage , alittle richer to cool it down and just think it is to lean ,pipes are blueing pretty bad , have the basic stage 1 stuff on it and download , don't wan't to spend the bucks on a dyno tune or a cert , just woundering if a stage 2 download from my local dealer would get it richer or do too much like to the timing and other stuff

The dyno is your friend and is going to get you the best tune. If you don't have a dyno you will be better off getting a power commander III from fuelmoto or someone else IMO.

Forget the download. If you don't want to go the dyno route, consider the Dobeck TFI; Gen 3 or 4. Straight forward DIY install, good customer service/help and you can "tune" yourself.

I run a Dobeck. Got it on eBay cheap. Originally had the dealer stage 1 flash. Bike had decel popping with vh bss. Cammed the bike, added the DFO and 2n1, bike runs much better. Takes a little time to adjust the DFO and get it adjusted - no decel popping, better acceleration and keeping the fuel mileage decent, low 40's mpg.

Dyno tune-mapping for my PCV was the best $200 I've spent.. eliminated all the decel popping, and got more power from the engine.. thing started running like a bat out of hell. Now that I've put a new engine in my bike, I'm going to have to do it again, and won't think twice about how much it costs to have it done.

If you have a set of bigass bolt cutters and know how to turn a wrench, you can do cams yourself. It's about a 2 hour job. Hell, rebuilding my entire engine (disassembling rocker boxes, heads, cylinders, removing pistons, disassembling cam chest, switching cam bearings, installing new cams, lifters, reassembling cam chest, assembling piston rings, installing pistons, getting pistons & rings inside new cylinders, installing new cylinders, reassembling top end, pushrods, etc etc).. from start to finish took roughly 8 hours of labor, and most of that was yelling "Damnit this bolt is 7/16" and I can't find my damn 7/16" socket in a 3/8" drive what the hell is happening?! get me another beer, damnit!".

It's not that critical of a job.. easier than fabricating my own swingarm bag mount.

NO... the stage two usually means U have installed cams. Personally I've never heard them called a stg 2 download. I know they have them for bike with STG1 and cams so I reckon it could be called that.

First most all header pipes will turn blue regardless of tuning, That's one of the reasons why they have heat shields on them. The other is to keep Ur legs from getting burnt as much as U would by touching the header pipe itself.

A stock motor A/F is around 14.8-1,. which is lean, and it has to come that way thanks to the EPA..

Most all Tuners who tunes with a good tuner usually adjust the A/F ratio around 13.8 when they do a dyno. This will cool the motor down but Ur Header pipes will prob still turn blue, but not Ur mufflers..

There are so many benefits of having a Dyno. vs a download or cheaper fuel mgt system.

Ways to help cool Ur Engine is.

Just put some miles on her.. Mine didn't feel totally broken in till I had 25K or so on her.

Free flowing muffs and HP A/C with some kind of fuel mgt.

A set of Cams helped mine the most..

When our bike was new I got the dial type Oil tank temp gauge and she ran around 245- 250 for the first thousand miles riding around.

At the 1K I had the Rush muffs, SE-AC, SYN-3 oils in all three, SERT, and dyno done..
Doing all this did help cool her a little, average temp came down to 235-240,

AS the miles rolled on close to 15k her temp was down to 230-235....

At 15k I had some 26h cams installed and re-dynoed.
After this was done the oil temp came down to 215-220.

So STG 1 helped,
Dyno helped.
Syn oils helped
Cam helped the most.

If U want to have Ur bike running in its best tune condition. U HAVE TO PAY the HARLEY TAX like the rest of us do.

Of the tuners Power commander is the best. If you out it with the auto tune it is almost as good as a dyno tune that adjusts for altitude on a road trip.
