Default night train purchase??

hey guys, im seriously considering a night train but not sure which year. You know, the whole carb to efi and engine/trans size comparison. what you guys think? it's either that or a deuce. or a night rod. lol.

For a NightTrain, I would choose anywhere from 1999 - 2009 model years, and ride the **** out of it. hope this helps

My vote is for the EFI Night train (but I am biased). I have always been a carb guy (my last 3 bikes were carb), but quite honestly, anything EFI that I have ever had has never caused me issues. The first thing I had that was EFI was my 2004 Arctic Cat Firecat 600 (snowmobile). There was nothing better than pulling it out of the garage and pulling it over twice and it is running. Not to mention that thing went like a raped ape!

I was torn on the 88 motor with 5 speed tranny versus waiting until I could afford a 96" and 6 speed, but in all honesty, I don't use 5th gear until about 65-70 anyhow.. If I wanted to go 100 MPH all the time, I would have bought a rocket for half the price and had 6 gears and 160MPH. You see, I'm all about low and slow. People can't see how badass your bike is anyhow when you are going 135 MPH...

They both have benefits, and drawbacks. If EFI has an issue, chances are you are going to a shop and it might be spendy... Rare. Carbs, although simple in nature and parts are generally cheap, are definitely more temperamental when they start to get even just a little bit dirty. I love the ease and simplicity of a carb, but I also love knowing that my bike is going to start every time I hit the button. There is a reason that carburetors are not used anymore....

Just my $0.02

Ha, yeah thanks Jim. sure narrowed it down for me. Yeah I've been leaning more towards the 07-09, due to the same above reasons. their isn't much difference between the three really that I've seen. Just small stuff. I guess the biggest could be the frame change up from 07-08. from 08-09 it's like a front fender and different maps and other small stuff. I figure an 08 or 09 would set me about right. now it's just a choice of vivid black or denim black.

Love my 06 night train only thing is it has the 88 and the 96 would be nice sometimes like the highway or long flat roads where that 6th gear would be awesome
Hope that helps

Get a 09 last year, it will be worth the most, plus the 96,

I'd go with the old 88" and build it to a 95" stage two or more.
So an 05 would be a starting point, nice bike...

I just bought an 06, 88 5 speed. But have not got a chance to ride it yet. I used to have a 2000 1200 sportster so I know that anything will be a bigger upgrade.

I was in the same boat as you. Wondering if I should get the 96 with the 6 speed. But I kept telling myself, "If I never had a six speed or the "bigger" motor, then I'll never miss it.

That's really I can tell you about my decision. Like I said I haven't had a chance to even ride mine.

TOUGH CALL. I have an 88 and 5 spd and don't have any issues running at 75-80. Sure, it runs a little higher RPM but how fast do you really need to go? NOW, how fast do you WANT to go is a whole different question!

I have read plenty of people on this site who swear by Carb and then plenty who swear by EFI. I only know the carb so I can't comment. I do know my Indy prefers carbs anyday and I trust his judgment!
