Default Bolt Replacement

I have a 2012 FLSTC with 900 miles on it. I recently had the blackwall tires replaced with whitewall tires. I took the wheels off myself and was ready to reinstall them but the manual says not to reuse any of the rotor, sprocket and brake bolts because of lose of torque. Do I really need to buy all new bolts given the low milage on the OEM bolts?

Thanks,

Jack

realistically you should, however, i've had mine taken apart with about 770 miles on them and reused the same bolts without issue.

Bolts are cheap enough, ask yourself if you're life is worth the price of new bolts

Thanks Jim I appreciate your response. I could understand it if I had thousands of miles on the bike. I'm not a "torque" expert but I can't imagine any damage to the bolts with only 900 miles on them.

Thanks again,
Jack

I agree with you purpledeuce, I'm trying to find out what would cause the need for them to be replaced with such low mileage on them.

Thanks,
Jack

It has nothing to do with mileage. Certain bolts with high torque specs, can't be re-tightened to the same torque spec twice since the first time you do it the bolt is weakened. The second time you torque to the same spec you run the risk of shearing the head off the bolt or having it fail unexpectedly down the road.

Just do it right, buy replacements.

Bolts stretch when torqued. Are you feeling lucky? Sometimes you can get by with it, but the chances are that you are gonna get bit eventually.
