...and it sounds like a loud clanging noise and a hesitation-hit the starter again..she kicks right over. Runs with no issues.
Did 300 miles today-no problems.
Never has done this/sounded like this before. Left the bike on the charger for most of the morning before heading out-issue came up after I stopped for lunch.
Oh geez, the dreaded starter clang noise. Yep, you're done for. Better just bring the bike and title to me on a trailer and I'll dispose of it for ya.
Actually, it was probably just the starter gear striking the gear ring on the clutch bowl before engaging the teeth. Next time ya change the primary oil, check for metal shards.
What did you have for lunch??? it sounds like the motor ran back against the starter and could have been caused by many things. if the gas boiled in the inj feed line, a carbon build up, comp spring is getting weak. mine used to do the same thing and I went with a SE comp, fixed the problem. the other thing you could do is not stop for lunch and keep riding...
If it starter is acting up it may be your starter relay. Mine was doing that and I replaced the relay,,,,so far no problems. Touch wood. It is the lighter one under the seat buy the fuse box.

Will check...your idea seems better than not stopping or handing the bike over to EasternSP.
Also check if the started is loose in the mount and check the starter cable from the relay and from the battery, if loose.
Our '02 XL1200C did the same when the battery was not fully charged our when the engine was hot, the started had to fight the compression stroke when starting.
Could be the compression release spring sticking.
