Default Problem installing headlight hood type visor ring

Howdy!

I have a 2013 FLSTC that I'm changing the light rings to the hood visor ring type. All went well with the exception of the headlight. Basically when I tighten the securing bolt the ring slips up about 1/32" and then is loose. What seems to be the problem is that the rivet is loose allowing the bracket to angle forward forcing the ring to rise.

Anyone else have this issue? Suggestions on how to tighten the rivet? Getting a backing bar around all that chrome is scary.

Here's a couple of photos.

Installed but the hood is loose:

Here's the loose rivet on the securing bracket:

Thank you!

Mine has always been loose. It doesn't matter how tight I get it, it doesn't change. It doesn't rattle loud enough to hear over the bike while running.

Wrap the bucking bar in a rag so it does not hit the chrome and if you have someone who can help hold the bar tight against the head of the rivet, the smooth side, then use a steel punch with the tip ground to a round point to fit into the hollow bowl of the rivet tail and "Swell" the rivet tail, or you can just hit the rivet tail with a ball peen hammer to "Swell" the rivet tail, use the round end of the ball peen hammer.
Don't get carried away with the hammer but you will need to use some hard taps to "Swell" the tail and set the rivet.

Did you make sure and use those foam-tape strips supplied with the trim?
The look like pieces of weatherstripping.
I even added some extra weatherstripping to mine to firm up the fit even more...

Thank you!

I'm going to see if I can find a small rivet brake that can fit in the area, hopefully today.

The weather stripping is on the passing lights rings (which fit perfectly), not the headlight ring. The headlight has two tabs (about 2 and 10 o'clock). The tabs have a rubber gasket on them. The original ring has slots in a U shaped channel offset so you slide the ring on, then rotate into position. The restraining bolt & bracket just has to keep the ring from rotating.

The new visor ring has a lip that you slide over the two tabs. It relies on the restraining bracket and bolt to both hold the ring against the housing and hold the ring down on the tabs. The angle of the bracket controls the downward position of the ring.

Add some anyway.
Mine was slightly loose too, but since a added a "bead" of that weatherstripping tape across the top it's solid now...

Gotcha. Thank you. I'll look again at it this evening to see where weather stripping can help.

The one I installed wasn't loose, but I do remember I needed another pair of hands to help get it all lined up and tightened. Its been 5yrs since I did it.

Hood visor ring on tight and secure, kudos to jam436!

I tried first tightening the rivet using a ballpean hammer, no joy. So I drilled out the rivet and replaced with a pop rivet. Still no joy on the ring. So installed 3/16 x 3/8 automotive weather strip (all around except for the tabs) and worked the ring on.

Thank y'all!

Next pretty day I'll take photos...
