Greetings all. I do not YET have a softail, but I am considering purchasing a used one. I have a line on a 95 Hertiage Classic that has been sitting for 5 years. Owner finally realized he can no longer ride and is looking to part with her. Bike has 28K miles w a stage 2 kit and Mikuni (spelling?) carb. The bike has been cleaned and a new battery installed. Says the carb has also been cleaned. I'm going Friday to look and was hoping my fellow HDForums members could advise me of areas of concern/what to look for with this model and year.
I understand the layup and maintenance issues. I am looking for model specific issues like "Check the alignment of the..." or "make sure the _____ has been replaced" or "The cam tensioner is______ and should be replaced every...". Those kinds of things.
Thank you in advance and stay safe.
I will edit the thread Friday night after I scope out the scoot.

I would be mindful of how and where it's been stored. Garage, carport or outside. Also when the last time any of the fluids were changed. Especially if it's been sitting for two years. That's a lot of time for moisture to build up and settle. Also surface rust but that's more cosmetic. Usually after things sit not being used, washed, or maintained things will show wear in other areas. Also I would check the tires for dry rot.
It's nearing the mileage where most people advise changing the tappets b/c they are known to come apart anywhere from 30,000 and up. If you're used to jap bikes, then expect a lot more noise in the valve train (it's just the way evos are). So, noise doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong.
Check the drive belt for cracks or issues b/c they are expensive to replace on softails (or at least time consuming if you do it yourself) and factor that into the sale price.
The bike looked much nicer in pictures than in person. There are some dry rot issues with the tires and fuel lines. We could not come to an agreement on $. Thanks for the input.
