Default Does it make sense ??

I have a 2013 Street Glide love the bike but I think it is too big for me .
I will be 70 years old soon and in good health workout and watch my weight . The thing is i love to ride but I am slowing down . The 500 mile weekends are a thing of the past . I have road motorcycles for over 50 years Now I just like to ride close to home .

I am looking to trade my Street Glide for a Softail or Dyna . Something no older then 5/6 years old . I road WideGlides for ever ( had 5) and I miss the lite quick handling of the cruisers .

Am I nuts

KEYBEAR,

Definitely not nuts. Practical. Getting the right bike for your physical condition and riding style is the best thing you can do.

Spend a day and test ride Dynas and Softails to see which one you enjoy the most... and get it!

Well that is good advice but I don't need to buy a newer bike and really don't want to .
I will take a beating trading down with a dealer . Just thinking I may find a person looking to trade up . I really would like to find a clean Softail in the 2008 / 2011 years . I have a post in the for sale site .

FWIW, going from a bagger to a stripped bike is tough.

i would look for a heritage softail or something with bags & a fairing on it
(the CVO softail convertible?)

just thinking out loud, the wind (without a fairing) may fatigue you a lot more now, i know it kills me to ride my wifes' softail out on the interstate at speed, after all the years on baggers.

i would think ANYONE on a softail would jump at the chance to trade up to a SG, SG's are just so popular now.

i think you are doing the right thing, keep riding, but get a bike that suits you better.
my dad's ~70, and he and I talk about stuff like this all the time

i dont think a dealer will work with you, because the 15's are coming, and the 14's are still on the floor.

pray about it!

My 76 year old uncle has 87,000 + miles on his 08 Electra glide classic. He has had more broken bones than Evil Kneivel in his life and when we ride you can not tell him from any ones else's age. We in our riding groups are in our 40's and 50's. Once he takes his helmet off and gets off of his bike he looks his age, all broken, sore and bent over.

I think the bike is excellent therapy as he loves to ride. It is all how you feel.

The Street Glide is not that much heavier than a softy. I would keep the Glide.

I am about in the same condition as your uncle . Two new knees both shoulders rebuilt and a kidney transplant in 1984 3 years ago a stroke and heart attack. But I stay fit and still keep up . This SG is my first tour bike and I do miss the wind

I am 73 and just recently downsized from an 09 electra Glide Classic to a 2013 Heritage Softail for the reasons you mentioned. On a day ride I may cover 100 - 150 miles but most of my riding is around town and there is a big difference in the handling weight of the Tourer and the Softail.

FWIW, I am not quite as old, but in my 60's, and I also suggest you take a look at the Heritage. The center of gravity makes it easier to handle at slow speeds and it has all the equipment (windshield, bags, etc).

In addition you may have a better chance of finding a person who wants to move to a true touring bike after starting with the Heritage.

GL and ride safe.

You (or me lol) are not going to get any younger anytime soon so something else to think about to help increase your riding days even longer would be something in the lines of a Dyna Superglide. They only have 29 deg. rake which makes them easy to handle & weigh 100lbs less than some softies. I run piggy back shocks & a windshield on mine and the thing handles & rides like a dream.

(In running order)
2010 Softail Classic FLSTC - 761 lbs
2010 Dyna Superglide FXD - 663 lbs
