Default Nut covers falling off

My wife has a 2009 Softail Deluxe that has front and rear nut covers. I am on my third set of covers for the rear. The stock bags knock the left side off within a couple of weeks after installing them. They do have a disclaimer saying they will not work with bags. Has anyone had good luck with any of the rear axle nut covers installed with the standard Harley bags? The rear swing arm was chromed and begs to have the nuts covered. Thanks for any input.

Hope you get some kind of workaround for the problem. In the meantime stop frustrating yourself.

Instead of the covers you can get the chrome axle/nut kit.

I have the cover on my 03 and it has never fallen off. Dab it with silicon, use blue loctite on the allen set screw

Mine are:
43428-09 - Front Axle Nut Covers, Gloss Black – Billet
43422-09 - Rear Axle Nut Covers, Gloss Black – Billet

What I did with mine was as follows:

Even though the instructions say to only use one set screw, I went ahead and used two set screws anyway for a tighter fit.
The front covers already had two tapped holes but the rears only had one each.

So I drilled and tapped another 10/24 hole in that set - 60° away from the first.
That way each set screw would hit a flat on the nut.
Then I went to Lowe's and purchased new SS allen-head set screws - the ones in the kits were too short IMO.
I wound up getting an assortment of [2] each; 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" long set screws (for around $2 total), then I replaced the ones in the H-D kits with the next size longer for all.

Then before putting the covers on, I squirted a gob of Permatex Black into each one to "glue" each one in place.
Between that and the set screws, I now need a rubber mallet to remove them.
I've never lost one...

Jam 436 thanks for the details. The more I thought about it the more I started coming up with a solution similar to yours. Thanks again!

Do you check them often to see if the set screw is backing off because of vibration?? If so you may need to use heavier locktite.
