I had my first chance to ride one last weekend at a demo. The poor Fatboy wasn't getting any love and I had never ridden a Softail before. Wow! That was my favorite Harley ever. Not really crazy about the looks, but the ride was fantastic.
Harley needs to get over this lowered suspension crap though. It was grinding the floorboards taking corners at parade speeds. If they could get that bike's ground clearance on par with the touring bikes it would be hard to beat. If they would give it dual front brakes and make it look like a Low Rider (sans the lowered suspension bit) it would be in my garage.
Time for a re-design like the touring bikes...However I just got mine for 2500.00 off MSRP + they covered the sales tax + .09 finanacing. Hell I couldn't say no!
Street Glide i think is the #1 selling bike in the world. You can see why.. they put tons into marketing them, upgrading the electronics and stuff (big in this day and age), and the softails don't get too much.. ABS..security.. and a trip-o-meter button on the handlebars. I agree they need an overhaul, and I would greatly adore dual front discs (or at least let me buy the fork and new front wheel to convert mine).
As far as being lowered, i agree they need a bit more clearance overall.. but that was the point of the softail.. to give that low, hardtail look without the hard suspension.
However, I hurt my back a few times, most recently in March, so it's hard for me to lift my leg over my bike, so im glad it's low. But that's just for me.

Ok dude I give up, why would this matter at all to softail owners. I guess Harley should stop making everything but tourers since there so popular and nobody buys anything else. If softails are doing so poorly why do they have so many models including (CVO models) and the touring actually have less standard models. Harley wouldn't be in business if they continued to make motorcycles nobody buys. I personally don't care what's popular or cool. All that matters to me is owning the ride that makes me want to ride. If Harley stop selling softails I'll buy another brand new heritage and a new softail deluxe and be done buying Harleys.
I just traded in my 2012 Streetglide for a 2014 Heritage, best move I ever made! The lower height, lighter weight, and counter balanced motor make this bike ride like a dream. I've already swapped out the seat, I have new bars and risers and a stage 1 setup going on this weekend. If I can just get some tunes on the new bike I'll have it made.
I have both ,still ride my Fatboy as much as the street glide. Maybe More. Was suppose to sell softail but just cant. I am liking that new Fatty . Some changes over my 09 .As far as change some things better left alone. Style wise any way .
Love my Fatty! Sales people keep trying to get me to trade for a touring bike. No way Ho Zay! I am not a fairing or windshield guy. I also like not having my motor look like a paint mixer at stop lights. Wife won't ride mor than 200 miles in a day, so no need for a touring bike. Only sound I listen to is the thumping of my big V-Twin..(and wife in my ear on the blue tooth headset...)
