Georgia Move
I live just northwest of Atlanta and it was a pretty nice area 'til about 4 or 5 years ago. Traffic, crime, corruption, and racial tensions have become a real issue.
Many areas have seen steep declines in home values with businesses dropping jobs to match.
While I've been here for more then 15 years, I look forward to moving out.
Good luck!
As Pine Tree says, "it depends". I live in West Central Georga, just north of Columbus. Great area for riding. You can get very rural, or typical suburbs. I would try to stay away from Atlanta. The other larger cities, Savanah, Macon, Augusta, etc. are not as crowded. North Georgia has mountains, the southeast has the ocean, and there is everything in-between. Housing is higher in the larger areas, check out some websites for cost of living when you find an area you want to live.
Good luck, and we will welcome you to the Peach State.

If I lived in Atlanta like Free Spirit I'd be looking to move also.
since I don't I think living here is about as good as it gets for me.Depending on what you do for a living like living anywhere these days is a crap shoot for employment. If your retired it's great.Housing is more than affordable these days and abundent.I'm a country boy so rural Georgia fits my lifestyle.Friendly people, great riding pretty much year round.Nice change of seasons with only a short winter.Fishing, hunting, racing, small towns abound all over the state. What area are you looking at.The beach and mountians are only a short ride away.State taxes are fair compared to a lot of states. The only thing that irks me is the ad volurom taxes on autos, they suck.G.

I am in Augusta Ga and relocated here from New England about 7 years ago. We could offer you much better details if you told us what part of Georgia you are looking at because it ranges dramatically from inner city Atlanta to cud chewing South Georgia.
Let us know.

I guess I should have mentioned where we were looking. Newnan, Hampton, McDonough and Covington just to name a few. We live in the country now. (PA) I like to hunt, fish, watch the races and of course ride my bike. I prefer the mountains, but I don't really have to live there.
We're leaving for Newnan again on Wednesday to look at houses in the above mentioned areas. I don't mind commuting to work, since it'll be seat time on the bike.
I just don't want to move into a really bad, crime ridden area. All of the kids are grown and on their own, so I'm not ready to retire yet. (we're middle aged) I hope this helps a little.

Come on down. We moved from Cleveland Ohio to Hinesville Ga. last year and don't regret it one bit. It was nice not having to shovel snow over the winter. Course it only got cold for about 3 weeks here and the only jacket I wore was a thermal sweatjacket. But the summer so far has been real hot, but the machine shop I work in is air conditioned. Whew.

I don't mind the cold, but I hate shoveling snow!
We're also looking at Carrollton and Villa Rica.
We're driving down tomorrow. I just hope we find what we're looking for.
Traditionally Atlanta has had a solid job market but like every other part of the country right now, with the economy, jobs can be hard to come by. The only area that does not seem to be suffering is health care. Nurses for instance are needed everywhere and are commanding signing bonuses. What line of work are you in?
Working in and around the City of Atlanta pays the most. If you're in a technology field, the Roswell and Alpharetta areas seem to be the hot spots for those.
Just FYI if you're living in a burb but commuting to Atlanta, the South and West sides are the lesser of all evils as far as commuting goes. Traffic on I-85 South of the Perimeter is still tolerable as is up the West side of I-285 the perimeter around Atlanta. Living in say Canton/Woodstock/Cumming but commuting to Atlanta entails alot of sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic unless you go in early then leave early. Same for I-75 above Atlanta and 400.
North Georgia is really beautiful. Carrollton is a quaint little college town. Not as nice as Newnan, I think, but still like it. Villa Rica is fine too. Cartersville is another area I like. Rome, GA; Summerville. The Lake Burton area above Helen is Gorgeous! Athens is a great town too.
Alot will depend on where you're likely to be employed with your line of work. You probably don't want to be like my husband and I who live all the way down in Newnan, but commute to the NW side of Atlanta and back, every day, racking up 700 miles a week. We go where the money is, but definitely got more bang for our buck buying land and a house in Newnan. We'd love to live over in the Milton area which is sort of between Roswell and Canton/Woodstock as it is still somewhat country with good schools and much closer to where we work, but wth the home values being what they are there, we would be lucky to be able to afford five acres and a house as opposed to 17+ acres.
Home and land values will be more for the most part for all points North of Atlanta. To the South, you definitely get more bang for your buck land/property/home-wise because those areas are less popular.
Best of luck on your trip down.
