I have a 1998 Sportster sport that the starter will ingage, but then sounds like it's free spinning. I've even tried jumping it off my truck for increased amperage and that didn't help. i've now ordered a new 1.4kw starter and a 260 amp. battery. Am I headed in the right direction?

 

Yes you are heading in the right direction

 

It sounds like the solenoid is not engaging. Most likely the starter is the problem.
