Default Speedometer relocation

I have been searching the forums looking for a good way to relocate the speedometer on my 2004, XL883 Sportster. I just don't like the way it stands high over the handle bar clamps like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Most of the brackets that are available on the market are nice but crazy expensive and the the littel Auto Meter 3209 Tach/Speedo bracket, although inexpensive, buries the speedo down under the tank on the left side of the bike where it is out of sight (literally) and not easy to see while riding. I decided to join the forums and post this solution as I have been lurking and learning for years and hope I can give something back to the community.

I removed the stock speedometer/indicator light bracket, top mounted headlight and eyebrow style headlight bracket The mounting holes of the original bracket are a little farther apart than the holes in the upper triple tree where the headlight mounting bracket was mounted. I used a round file (chain saw file) to move each mounting hole in the bracket about 1/8" closer toward the center.

This allows the original bracket to be remounted a full 2-7/8" lower than it's original position, well below the handle bar clamp. I know you're thinking "now what the H am I going to do about the headlight?" I found a used 7", bottom mount headlight from a HD Fatboy on eBay for $68.65 delivered which was cheaper than many of the aftermarket brackets. I liked this super large light but there are lots of bottom mount lights available. My lower triple tree had a center hole that you can easily see in the first picture all ready to accept the headlight mounting bolt but if yours does not it is a simple task to drill the hole and mount the light.

f the aftermarket brackets

This seems like a cheap way to relocate your speedometer, especially for the cafe and bobber guys who want their speedo below their handle bars while still keeping a "heads up" view of their speedometer. While I am sure I am not the first to think of this I have not seen this solution in my searches and maybe you will be inspired to give this a try. Post your results if you do!
