I've not had that problem with my Harley but did have it with a Honda CB-750. Try putting it in gear and rocking it forwards and backwards and then try to start it again. Something could be out of whack with the starter teeth alignment...

the solenoid is not kicking the jackshaft out. Solenoid could be weak or there is a fork in the solenoid that is broke.

Your Sportster has a Denso starter, if the starter contracts are worn, you will only hear a click or no sound when you crank, it is repairable, PM me ok. I would suggest you to check the ground first, common problem, it could also be the starter pinion drive.

I misread your post, if the starter turns, the solenoid is working, that starter uses a solenoid to push the plunger out, at the same time it completes the starter motor circuit. Sounds like the pinion gear is gone.
