Default Interstate

Well yesterday got my first ride on the interstate on the way to work and back...about 20 miles each way. I only got up to around 60 mph the cross winds were moving me all over the place. I have an 883 low and have been riding about 10 days now, I just cannot picture going any faster than the speed limit..70 right now. Maybe I will get used to it with time....but these people that say they get over 100+ that just seems crazy. Is there a better position other than sitting straight up I should be using to limit the wind? I am 5'11" and 220#

There are oldtimers here that will argue, and I'm not thrilled with the look, but if you want to commute or travel on the interstate with any kind of comfort you need a windshield unless you're a masochist. Either the Harley Q/D shield or Memphis Fats Q/D in my opinion. It makes a HUGE difference.

I did a ride on the interstate a couple of weeks ago did between 70 and 85 for about two hours nonstop without a windshield.I wish I had one, it really gets to you after awhile. The wind was pushing me so hard that my left handgrip started coming off from holding on so tight. When I slowed down to 60 it felt like I was standing still.I had alot of fun doing it but was tired afterwards.

Two hours is a long time...I noticed my grip was like steel. I guess its just getting used to it, only just over a week I got on it and went round my sub-division and 20 seemed fast, the the local roads at 30-35 that seemed real fast, now the interstate at 50+. When I got off on to the local roads again 35 didn't seem so fast, I guess time will tell and the wind shield will help in the mean time

I got my sportster about a year ago and I was the same way.I just rode side streets and then moved to secondary roads. It took about two months for me to get on the interstate. It takes some getting used to.Once you get on the interstate and settle into the ride say about 5 miles or so its pretty fun and you get used to the speed. Its made me a much better rider.

i like the wind and even at 65 on the interstate you dont really have to have a death grip to keep it from pushing you back and i weigh in at 260 and 6'

If you are in a heavily populated area you should probably try a few rides on the interstate during non-commute times. Its going to be less busy and you will be less stressed. The other thing to think about is that you were probably a little nervous this first time and any kind of cross wind is going to seem pretty bad, a little more experience will probably make you more comfortable so that you don't notice it quite so much
