But I think I'll wait to source or improvise a stand so I can turn the wheel to turn engine
Starter would not be my choice. Could bump bike on ruff asphalt. (Mark chain with chalk maybe). Lot of YouTube stuff. Sporties are easy and fun to work on. Oil and clutch is too cool.

Doubt you are even going to find any difference. Please report back.

Does not a Sporty go by backoff on both clutch and chain tension?
If I am understanding you they are two different things with different adjustment methods.

The chain you just turn the adjuster until the required up down movement (play) is reached. Then stop and tighten lock nut.

The clutch sees you turn the screw out to feel tightness and then turn it in a 1/4 turn.

On my 2013 XL1200C I have adjusted the Primary a few times now that I have 30K plus miles and haven't turned the wheel to find loose or tight spots, BECAUSE I couldn't!

Even with the plugs out and in a higher gear I can barely turn the rear wheel, it just doesn't spin, it chugs LOL.

I must be doing something wrong, can any of you guys turn the rear wheel when in gear ??

BTW: Yes of course the rear wheel is off the ground

Easy peasy. Plugs out, fifth gear, you can just roll it across the garage with the inspection cover off and check primary chain for the tight spot. I just had my bike on a lift for a 1250 upgrade, and could turn the engine over with new pistons and cylinders no problem as well by hand using the rear wheel. There is some resistance, but nothing too difficult to manage.

Have you tried eating more spinach? Put some meat on those chicken wings!!!
