I believe that Dyna and XL models from 1987 onwards use the same 39mm diameter narrow glide forks and triple tree brackets, so a fork mounted fairing should be interchangeable between both model families without any modifications.
The first big twin to have a Sportstewr front end was the 1971 Super Glide which was created by Willie G Davidson, he took the engine and frame from a 1200cc FL Electra Glide and grafted on the complete front end from a Sportster and Willie created the worlds first "factory custom" motorcycle. Willie also designed the ugly "boat tail" rear end that was used on both the Super Glide and the Sportster. However the boat tail made the seat hight on both models overly tall and the high seat didn't mate up with the fuel tank giving the whole plot a strange look.
