Hi from the UK, I have a 1999 XL53C that has suddenly stopped starting!(if that makes sense). When I hit the start button the engine runs for a few secounds and the just dies .
I have checked fuel/plugs/air filter/battery-etc no joy getting slightly desperate anyone out-there got any ideas ? Jasper :-)

Check for fuel problem like plugged petcock ,sludge in tank. Is the gas old at all? I dont think electrical would act like that, it just wouldnt start at all.

Ceck this on the carb

on mine, it's an 06 but the 05 had it as well, not sure if they are on yours, there is a vacume hose that goes to the back of the petcock - darn near imposible to see and easily missed. It is a vacume hose

If this is off, the valve will not let fuel flow - check if you have one and if it is hooked up and has no holes in it - it is about the same diamiter as an ink supply in a ball point pen - good luck

Good god I remember this thread - and then last month, had the same problem as you did bensonjv - when I forgot to reattach this very same hose after putting the tank back on (did a bar change over)[sm=headbang.gif]

Did you take the float out and put it in a glass of gas to see if it has a pinhole leak?

Still sound like it may be fuel. Remove the fuel line from the petcock or carb. (whichever is easiest), apply vacuum to the fitting on the petcock or you could crank the engine with the starter, does the fuel flow????? Careful not to spill the fuel, use a hose directed to a catch can.
