Default Electrical Problems

On Saturday I installed chrome switch covers that I bought from J&P. There were no instructions, was careful not to pull to hard on the wiring in placing the switches in the new covers. Now I have electrical issues.

SPEEDO inoperative as well as the odometer.

Turn signals inop front and rear

front running lights (amber) work properly
rear running lights (amber) are inop
tail light is inop
brake light is inop

Have looked for a fuse box or panel to no avail.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

2001 XL 1200C Sporster.

Well, apparently your an "Inactive Rider" then..... J/K

OK...It's 2001 sporty....there's a fuse box located in that black triangular shaped piece on the left side of the bike below the seat and rear of the battery. Just pull that triangle straight out, as it just pushes back into some rubber grommets. There's your fuses/relays. Oh, and the rear signals only act as turn signals, and do NOT operate as running lights, (they only blink when you hit the blinker button and otherwise always off).
Start by checking your fuses, and we'll all help you from there.

Thanks.
I removed the triangular cover behind the battery and pulled the piece out of the grommets.

There is a piece that has "circuit breaker" stamped in the metal piece. I crossed the terminals with ignition on and no blinkers, horn, or brake light. Didn't know any other way to test it.

Still searching for answers.

Normally I would suspect that you broke the front brake light switch. If you don't place a piece of cardboard between the front brake lever and the mounting bracket before you remove the switch cover, that will happen. However, that doesn't explain all of the other electrical problems.

Thanks Sportypig. How would I check to see if the brake switch is broken?

Default Brake switch

Problem has been identified as the brake light switch. Replaced the fuse and everything worked until i depressed the brakes (hand and foot) blows the fuse. Replace and retest same result.

Can the brake light switch be repaired or will i have to replace?

Thanks much.

your brake light switch inside your switch cover is grounding out. Check to see if you pinched the wires when you replaced the covers. A broken brake switch usually won't blow fuses.

I'll pull it off and check for grounding. There is apparently a cardboard trick for the hand brake lever that i didn't know about so did not use it. I presume the cardboard goes in front of the lever where the lever connects to the housing.

Should I try that as well?

Thanks

Yes the cardboard goes inbetween because when pull the brake the little limit switch breaks very easy only once did I ever make the mistake of not using the cardboard trick thought I could do without it ... Wrong!
