I read the Sportster history as stick'd above. But have a few questions
Read that the 04 you have to split the cases to access the transmission, have any of you had tranny problems on your 04 plus years?
What are the big differences say between 1999-2003 between a 1200 and a 1200 custom, other than foward controls? Do customs come with the larger tank?
Between 03 and 04 was there any increase in overall bike size? I know the 04 did have a larger rear tire just wondering if there was any increase in size or driver comfort?
I really like the 04 plus styling on the Customs with the larger tank, wider rear tire, etc just having trouble locating a 2005 or 2005 used around here less than 7k trying to find one around 5500 or so if possible. By the pictures the bike looks bigger than the earlier models
I have a 99 custom. The biggest problem I find is finding accessories. Everything seems to fit all models EXCEPT the custom. Mine came with a solid rear wheel too. It's cool but It really catches the wind!
Up to '03, all sporties came with the 3.3 gallon peanut style tank. The Customs had the forward controls, 21" front wheel, chrome cases, side mount horn, drag handle bars, and a different headlight set up (no eyebrow). '04 & up, they re-vamped the frames actually making them slightly smaller/shorter wheel base I believe, and rubber mounted the engine with the Customs keeping all of the stuff listed above, except the new larger 4.5 gallon tanks. Then in '07, the MOCO added FI.
A 4.5gal tank can be put on any sportster from '04 up. just depends on if it's FI or not. That will determine the type of tank. Pre '04's can take a larger tank but it will most liikely be aftermarket unless you want to do some fab work. I'm not sure the '04 and up are smaller, I thought the frames were just a tad larger because of the rubber mounts, I could be wrong though, Been a while since I saw the changes that were made, and there were a bunch.
Well, I thought of the frame change to slightly smaller may just be due to the forward controls being a little closer to the rider, as they feel a little more cramped than my '00. Oh well, I never really paid too much attention to it anyway since I had just gotten mine a few years prior to the change. Oh, and yes the larger 140 or 150 rear tire on the '04 & up versus the 130 stock rear on the '03 & prior.
