Default will a 3.5 gal tank fit a 2005 1200 sportster?

I have an opportunity to buy a 2005 sportster 1200 for a great deal. However, I really don't like the new 4gal tanks they went with on these. I was just wondering if a tank off an 883 would fit on one of these without too much cutting or welding. If anyone has any experience with this, your advise would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Yes, the smaller 3.3 gal tank will bolt right on. There will however be a gap between the seat and tank as the smaller tank is shorter. If the gap bothers you, you can change out the seat with one from the other (non C) model.

i know i'm bumping an old thread, but does anyone have any photos of what this would look like? (newer 04-06 sporty with an older 3.3 tank?) been thinking about switching mine over, but i'd like to see how dramatic the tank-to-seat gap is.

I don't have the pics, but all you have to do is find a 3.3 tank from a 04-06 sportster. Not an older sporty. 04-06 3.3 tank should bolt right up. The 4.5 gallon tanks only came on the C models.
