Default Starter is engaging while the bike is running. WTF?

While my bike (06 1200 custom) is running at idle or at speed, the starter will start engaging and disengaging. Has anyone had this happen or know what might be jacked up on it? I know it's electrical, but I don't know $%*T about electrical. I think it's a switch, selenoid or relay. Any info that might help me narrow it down would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I just internally rewired my wires in the handlebars, and when i was done, the bike would try to start as soon as I pressed the run button, without me pressing the start.

I took the wires back out, and one of them was nicked and that was enough to cause this problem. I cut off the affected part, soldered on a small extension, wrapped it up nice, repassed the wires, and presto, the problem was fixed.

Have you done anything lately to your bike, new handlebars, wire tuck, or anything that might have cut, scratched, or otherwise damaged any of the wires that are coming out of the right handlebar switch? this should be the black connector with 6 different wires coming into it.
in my case it was the black wire with the brown line in it that was the culprit.

Good luck

L

Gotta be a sticking switch or a short someplace as LouEyez had. Nothing else comes to mind. The short seems to be the likely source because if he switch was sticking it would probably not disengage when you used it to start the bike. The vibration probably causes the short when a wire is rubbing somewhere.

My Softail did that about 7 years ago. It was a bad starter switch.

I've had that happen a couple of times when I hit the horn.

It is becoming a regular problem on Harley's in general. Most of the time it has been a shorted starter button.

Also check for corrosion in the fuse box, especially the square black relays, one of those controls the starter.
