Default service intervals

Hi just took my my sporty in for its first service at 1600km and the dealer said the next service is due at 4000km then 8000km and so on .but theowners manual say that the services are at 1600km then 8000km 16,000 who is right i dont want to be paying for services that are not needed and i dont want to void the warranty. the service cost is not cheap the first service just cost me $272.25au and the next service at 4000km will be $230.00au do i need to go to a harley dealer for my services or can i use any moterbike dealer if so will it void my warranty.

Here in the US, you can take your vehicle anywhere you want or do it yourself without voiding the warranty. You just have to have the receipts if there is a warranty issue. The manual says 5000 mi (8000 KM) so that's the interval. It sounds like your dealer is trying to increase his profit a little. (double?)

Think it prob depends on the age of your Sportster....

All '04-on models are on 1600km, then 8000km, 16,000km, etc intervals. Pre-'04 (pre-rubber mount etc) were half that i.e. 1600km, 4000km, 8000km, etc.

As has been said, in some countries you don't have to have a franchised dealer do the servicing work. In the UK (and the EU as a whole) it's OK to have anyone (even you) do the work, so long as you use lubes and parts of an equal or better quality to HD parts, etc. Plus keep ALL receipts! Not sure about Aus though!

Just for interest, whereabouts in Australia are you? I visit most years on business - last time I came I visited a HD dealers on the outskirts of Sydney - Blacktown, I think?
