Default 1996 1200 xlh Sportster speedometer question

I purchased this bike a while back and it didn't have a speedometer. So, I recently purchased a used stock speedometer/tach off of a 1999 Sportster with the wiring harnesses for the speed sensor and the connector in the headlight. I went to hook it up last night and found that the harness connector in the headlight didn't fit. I was told by a few people that it should work with no problems or i wouldn't have purchased it. When I look at the wiring diagrams, I only notice 1 wire (black/yellow) that is different in the connector.

So, my question is...
Will the speedometer work if i bypass the connector or rewire it? or being its off a newer model does it require something my 1996 model doesn't have?

Kind of crazy that you never got a response on this. I just recently bought one myself in the same situation.

I would assume it wouldn’t matter. As long as the wires are the same you should be good. However the mileage on the new part will probably only match its original bike.

side note: you wrote your post on my birthday.
