I'd be doing both and having a close look in the bottom end.

Still haven't had the funds to rebuild it yet. However I do have another question. Should I replace the heads? There is a small dent in the rear head where a piece of piston hit it. There is no other visible damage. If I had the money I would just replace both heads with a 1200R set. I'm trying to get this on the road though. I'm starting to get itchy since I haven't been able to ride since.

if there is just a small dent in the head I would not worry about it....if there are any sharp protruding edges on the head file them off or they will make hot spots and cause problems with combustion...post some pics of the inside of the heads...are the valves and seats good???

The valves and seats are good. Creating hot spots is what I was worried about. I don't want to be riding cross country again and blow a hole in my head this time.

That ding in the top looks a lot more angular in the photo than in person.

I'd still use the heads, just remove any bur's.

Did you go with a 1200 ignition with the conversion too ? cause the 883 one runs too much advance since it's a 1200 now ?

I have a Daytona Twin Tec ignition. I'm gonna go for it and just replace the piston and jug. Cross your fingers and wish me luck.
