Default Speedometer Issue

Have a 1999 XL1200S.
Was in 5th gear this morning on way to work, but speedometer said I was going 35MPH.
Is the 1999 speedometer electronic? If so, would it be a sensor since it works but is inaccurate?

Any ideas on where to start would be appreciated.

Thanks,

1 place to start, remove the leads (not sparkplug wires) and clean any corrosion and replace the leads. My speddo was "bouncing" that solved it

the trigger in the trans is dirty that connects to the spedo

remove it and clean the end that will fix it < the oil silt will cause this to happen - jz
