How much you cut depends on how much preload you want. Ideally, you cut it so that when you sit on the bike the suspension is compressed about 25% from fully extended. This is called sag height.

I weigh 210 lbs. and I cut 1/2 inch off, works great for me.I also put 12.5" Progressive 412's on back and they are great as well.

herbz:

I tried the whole spacer for awhile, but it made the forks a little to stiff. So I went back and cut 1/2" off the length and that seems to work better.I also left the original oil in the forks as mine don't have the drain plugs on the bottom like the older models and that makes it a real pain to drain the old oil out.

I answered you on the other forum. But as a follow-up, yes 1/8" to 3/4" sticking out the top of the forks. I use 1/2".
