Default Replacing spots switch

How much trouble is it to replace the spots switch in the fairing switch panel? The manual says the ignition switch needs to be pulled. If I do that, do I need the alignment tool too? Also, I haven't seen the switch itself, but I think it has pins in the old switch's connector that have to be removed and moved to the new switch. Can anyone confirm this?

youtube will show you how to pull the switch- make a tool from squarshed 1/4" copper tubing ( screwdriver can hit some cams, not the others)..

or pull the switch and be careful to NOT turn the front end...pretty easy to change the switch.

can;t remember about swapping wires- so i guess it was no big deal- I added a 2nd switch.

the first one works as normal, the 2nd ( I have no rear speakers- so it goes in that position) keeps spots on with high beam

are you sure yours is bad?

Yes you have to remove the pins of the switch in the socket and put the new switch pins in

No, I'm not sure that the switch is bad but I suspect that it is. There's a connector behind the cap but I can't check it there unless I pull the cap off. My switch is intermittent, and by that I mean that the indicator light that is built into the switch is not always lit but when it is lit the lights work.

the switch only has power when on low beam- you know that right?

2.) the main connector from teh bike to teh switches is accessible on teh right side of teh lower dash...turn the bars to the left and dig up there, the wiring is held by a soft metal clip, you can reach up and pull it all down and check it in 2 minutes.

here's a pic of the wiring...the wires lead t the switch, the pin block is part of the bike's harness:

( the blue block is a connector I added for spots on with high beam mod- some guys do another approach- this works for me)

The light on my spot switch flickered for over a year before it quit working completely. But it was only the light in the switch, the switch still operates the spots flawlessly. Maybe I'll change it out the next time I have the console pulled

Mike, I'm familiar with that connector. I'll check it. I didn't know it was the same one the manual was referring to. Thanks. In reviewing the schematic, the switch has 3 wires. Black ground, yellow low beam and beige/black power to the spots. Where does power come from to feed the switch? And why is the switch grounded?

On my 09 the yellow wire to the spot switch is spliced into the lo beam power wire from the hi/lo switch. It's the power to the switch (that's why the spots only work on lo beam). The ground must be to illuminate the LED when you switch the spots on.

The ground wire must be for that LED like you say, I can't see any other purpose for it since the actual lights ground to the buckets they sit in.
