Default open element intake

Ok......how many of you guys ride with an open air intake without a rain sock? I'm pretty sure some of you have been caught in the rain without one, right?

Or should I just put my stock filter and housing back on.......

I will not ride in a downpour situation..... that I know of.

If you don't ride in downpour situations why worry about it.

In the case of the SE Ventilator, Yes, you can actually drown the bike enough to make it cut out and loose power in a heavy down pour. I've done it more than a few times being lazy.

Can't speak for other open element ACs.

I just carried the rain sock and put it on as needed. No biggie really. I think I may have put it on twice in 5 years. Otherwise it stayed in the saddlebag. The other issue I had on my carbed bike is that a strong wind gust would lean it out. Yep, it gets windy here in Kansas.

I have a Roland Sands Judge Ac on my fugly. We do a lot of touring so sometimes riding in the rain is part of the deal. I do have a rain sock to put on the ac, but with the lowers and as long as I'm moving it doesn't get much water. RS makes a sock material band I can put on the element under the metal bracket that stays on all the time, I think I'm going to go to that.

I always run a rain sock. Never been caught without one. Works even in torrential downpours.

This question comes up all the time. A rain sock is not necessary.

I've had an "open element" on all of my bikes. I put 10-15K a year on my bike.

I've ridden through driving persistent rain for hours and never had a single hiccup. Especially if your filter is properly oiled. Very little water actually hits it to begin with, and what little there is beads off.

RSD makes one that you can carry with you, I suppose its easy enough just to slap it on when you think it might rain, but at that point its a pretty simple question, I dont think it requires a vote from the masses.

I've been in situations where you couldn't have seen the torrential downpour coming, and couldn't have safely stopped in it for miles. I wouldn't take the chance.
