Default questions on security system

Last fall I purchased a 04 ultra classic. It has the security system with a fob with one button. They guy I bought it from told me the fob has to be with the bike for it to start, is this true? I didn't find anything about proximity in the owners manual. One other thing, I found a five digit code written in the owners manual which I assume is the override code. If I try it and it is not correct will I be able to use the fob to unlock it? I don't want to experiment and wind up locking up my bike. I will be getting a hold of the previous owner, but he was the second owner and seemed really nervous dealing with it so I doubt he knows much.

I think you'll find that you press the button to disarm, then use the key to unlock and operate the ignition switch. I always used the fob as - well a fob - fastened to the key, so never tried it away from the bike. I would be surprised if you need it close to the bike, that technology came along later, with button-less fobs.

If the security system is hooked up and operational, the FOB needs to be present to start the bike.

Give the code a try. You need to know if it works so that if you loose your fob or the battery goes dead, you can get it started. Nothing will happen if you try these things. Unless it has the siren, then it will can get noisy for a minute.

I would try:
Starting the bike without the FOB present
Starting the bike with the security code
Reprogram a code that you will remember

The fob for that year (push button) does NOT need to be in proximity of the bike in order for the bike to function. I think 06 and under has the push button.

Thanks for the info. I just didn't want to start playing around and find out I locked myself out. I really appreciate the help.

You hold the button down for a couple of seconds and the alarm will set, turn lights should flash. Once armed, press button twice, like double clicking a mouse, and it will un-arm, turn lights will flash twice I believe. Fob does not need to be present after unarming.
