Default 6-speed shift points

I did a little searching on here and found a few posts about it, but wanted to put up my thoughts about this as well.

I read the owners manual for my 07 FLHR and there is a chart that shows the shift points as:

Second - 15
Third - 25
Fourth - 35
Fifth - 45
Sixth - 55

Since the Road Kings don't come with a tach, I have been using my seat-of-the-pants tach and it seems like the shift points should all be moved up about 10 MPH. Using the points in the manual seems way too early for what the RPMs sound like to me.

These points below seem to work really good for me, but I am wondering what RPM I am shifting at.

Second - 25
Third - 35
Fourth - 45
Fifth - 55
Sixth - 65

Does anyone have a chart showing what the RPMs are at different speeds on the new six speed, so I can calibrate my seat-of-the-pants tach. [sm=shades.gif]

I have found, dead bone stock, my FLHRS likes for example to be 20+in second, 30+in third, etc. Cruising in fourth at 40 mph I can sense it saying, "just add 2 mph", so 32 in third, 42 in fourth, 52 in fifth, 62 in sixth would be the minimum mph for it to feel right.

My '07 FLHRC likes your second range. All within about a 10mph band, 4th midrange is plus/minus 50mph, 5th p/m 60mph, 6th 70mph.

I'm with ya!

Use your engine sound to shift as you can't be looking at your speedo all the time... You have a Rev Limiter that will not allow you to over-tach the motor...

I installed HD Speedo with built-in Tach on my '01 RKC (I liked the looks of it) but still hardly ever used it...

LOL.. I was just wondering if by shifting at these points, I was taching the motor over the break-in recommendations.

Didn't want to go over 4000 RPM for the first 50 miles.

Didn't want to go over 5000 RPM for the first 500 miles.

Am I anywhere near these points when shifting at the second range that I listed.

I already put almost 400 miles on it, so the first 50 are over and the first 500 is fast approaching. I guess it is what it is.

Why do they give you RPM recommendations in the owners manual for a bike without a tach.. LOL.

in my opinion , if you are riding with a little sense , you will not even reach 4000 rpm , i was amazed at those figures. You would have to ride it like you stole it , if you want to get to 5000 rpm. But like they said , go off of the sounds of your motor , you cant go wrong

I can't imagine why you'd ever hit 5k RPM.

On my 07 ultra, 4th gear to about 60mph is right at 3k rpm and its just in the torque curve. At 3500 im about 65mph and ready to go to 5th gear. I run that to about 80mph, then drop into 6th. I started out trying to ride it like my 03 roadking and the new ones are totlally different animals. I dont think i will ever see 5k rpm?????
