Default Starter issues

This morning I went out to get on my bike to come to work, and when I turned the ignition it made the usual sound I think its the fuel pump presurizing. Then when I went to push the starter button.....NOTHING, I pushed it about 4 or 5 time and a couple of the times it made a click like it was trying then about the 6th time it finally started. This has happened before. Does it mean my starter is going out? Any ideas on what I need to check?
Thanks
Jeff

Oh BTW its an 01 Road Glide EFI

starter relay, neutral safety switch, bad start button, or contacts may need cleaned in solenoid. those would be my guesses.

Does the 01 road glide have a neautral safety switch? I have started it while in gear before, Or at least pushed the button and the bike jumped forward.

No neutral safety switch. replace the relay first. Any auto parts store. Just take the old one with you.

Check and clean the battery connections and take the battery to a part store for a load test first. Check and clean the frame ground, and connection at the starter. I wouldn't throw parts and money at it until you verify those things first.

Check connections first, then load test the battery. If that all passes check the solenoid. Then the relay and starter.

I usually don't throw arts at stuff either, but it sometimes catches after repeated tries. The little start relay is $6.

Second the battery. 2001 Roadking here did the same thing, changed the battery and headed down the road.

Do the easiest, cheapest thing first--tighten your battery terminals.
