Default How to replace rear belt question

Let me start off by saying this is not my bike and I don't have a manual. It's my dad's 08 flhr and I am replacing the rear belt for him. I got to this point but now I am at a crossroads. What and how do I get the belt around the swingarm. Do I support the trans with a floor jack and remove the bolt inside of the hole (covered by chrome cap) or do I remove the two bolts for the swingarm bushing? Advice please

You have to remove the Swingarm (HD calls it a Rear Fork).

1. On the left side (the side you've pictured), remove the two bolts holding the Fork Bracket.
2. Take that bracket (complete with chrome cover) off.
3. Go to the right side of the bike and remove the round chrome cover (same bracket deal on the other side, but only remove the chrome cover).
4. Take an impact wrench and remove the right side nut (that is behind the chrome cover) while using a wrench to hold the left side nut stationary.
IF the left side nut spins free, re-tighten it and double it up with another nut. You want the right side nut free, not the left side...

5. Using a punch, drift or something, drive the pivot shaft out the left side of the bike taking with it the shaft, nut, cup washer, rubber mount, and outer spacer. (basically everything on the left side).

6. Wiggle the swingarm free. Replace your belt and reassemble.

Yes, support the oil pan with a block of wood or something before taking the shaft out.

That's the short version anyway.

Make sure the bike is well balanced on the stand before removing the rear fork. Ya don't want it to do a nose dive onto the garage floor.

It's not a hard job to do. Just take your time and go by the directions LP laid out. Easy peezy.

This would be the perfect time to do a bit of preventive maintenance in the form of replacing seals such as the shift shaft seal, primary bearing seal and jack shaft seal.

Maybe even lower the bike down until the front wheel is touching the floor. It'd be easier to prop up the transmission as well.
