Repair at L-5 S-1 that has never healed properly (lots of pain still) caged at L-4 L-3, and shaved L-1 L-2 and L-2 L-3! I have put 57000 miles on my 01 Ultra that I bought in 07 with 4000 miles on it. Mustang wide touring seat, highway pegs, changed oil in rear shocks and front forks ( Bel_Ray 10wt) moved bars back a bit.

It's been killing me for about 5 weeks now. An X-ray and 2 MRI's later they its same location but hitting left nerve instead of the previous right side. (07 ultra with factory shocks). Is better shocks going to make that much difference. Or, am I just pushing my luck?
Although mine issue is much lower, L5, S1, the preventative maintenance is the same. Stay in shape, exercise and use good posture. You probably over-tasked your back. Do you reach for your bars? Do you use a back rest? Your shocks would not be my first check as the lower back takes much more abuse than the upper vertebrae. I have found out that the more I task my back, without hurting it, the better I feel for a longer period of time. Good luck in searching for your answer.

Take a look at my back after surgery. Almost made me quit riding but I'm still at it. Bothers my legs now more than the back.

I'm fused from T12 to L5, with all sorts of crap in there!
I had a 360 fusion, cut from the front and the back at the same surgery.
They took 2 of my ribs to use as donor bone, plus cut the tops of both
hipbones to get more material. The rib area still hurts 18 yrs later, and my hips are just numb all the time.
This was a barbaric surgery, I would not recommend it to anyone!

The surgery almost killed me with infections that took over a year to clear.
I can't ride like I want to due to the constant pain, but I still have fun when I do!
This was the 5th back surgery, I should have quit while I was ahead!

I was still chasing a cure for the constant pain, and several doctors said I would
get good pain relief with a fusion, man were they ever wrong!
Now I have worse pain than I had before, but hey, it does great for my posture!

This is the best they could do with the scoliosis I have,
still not verystraight, but 50% better than it was.

Those hooks in my spine hurt like HELL!!
I'm always banging the rod ends on something too.

Yea, back pain can suck the life out of you!

I have started using a back support belt--like u use for lifting heavy objects.
I picked up the Back-A-line one on amazon for about $50. it has support ing the lumbar part instead of just spandex like a lot of the back support belts.
Havent been on many rides with it yet but--I wanted to pull the touring seat off my bike and put my Drag Specialties Spoon seat on and and ride----when I used that seat before for even short rides my back hurt---didn't have the same issue on that the last 2 times I took short 100 mile rides with the back support belt. I saw this mentioned by some of the long distance riders on other forums and decided it was a lot cheaper then a back rest on the bike.
Ill have to give it a much longer test out but the initial use was great for me.

No surgeries like you guys but I did have back issues once I bought this SG cause I'd ride it all day unlike previous bikes.

The backrest allowed me to push back from the highway pegs and get a very comfortable position and butt my lower back on the pad and get support and a pain free ride.
I hope you don't have a back rest only because you will definitely feel better once you get one. I never ride without it. Ever.

PS Some of you guys have had some incredible back surgery. My best to all of you that you can somehow be as comfortable as possible. That sucks. Good wishes towards you all.

Steroid shots will work if they can hit the nerve w/a fleuroscope.(spelling?)
Cools it down like molten metal hitting water.
