Doesn't sound like it was an oil filter problem in this case but I would not rule out a major oil leak related to a filter. With my '01 RKC I had the 1,000 mile service at the dealer I bought it from in Illinois. A week or two later, maybe 1,500 mile we were in Leadville CO and it started spewing oil. Could not see where it was coming from, put in a quart and started riding again and realized that at the rate it was leaking it would be empty in only a few minutes. Had it trucked to the dealer in Glenwood Springs thinking I was in for a big problem. The tech came out in a few minutes saying the problem as solved. He showed me the filter that he had removed, the seam had split on the filter and that was the leak. He said it looked like it had been dropped as there was a dent in the filter that had been conveniently turned toward the engine so you could not see it and thought that may have caused the problem.
When I got back to Illinois I went to the dealer and of course they denied any responsibility. Thanks goodness I had road side assistance that paid for the tow, it would have been $300-$400. Since then I have always changed my own oil and filter.
You can demand all you want..I am waiting until tomorrow to go and speak with the service and sales mgr, tonight would not have been a good night to do it. ..do I think it will do any good..not really but they will hear my opinion.
Tell the dealer you completely understand their position, and that you will be satisfied with your new 114. 117

Ya I would be pissed. But not sure what good it will do. They are fixing the bike under warranty. Car dealers would give you a loaner. Not sure how often that happens with items like bikes.
Even with lemon laws, it needs to happen more then once.

Just freakin pissed and upset..
I'm sure your not the first or the last that will have some trouble. Mine leaked every night from the day they dropped it off. Funny thing was it only leaked when it sat after riding for a couple hours. Mine turned out to be the O-ring seal on the crank sensor. Clean the hole, cleaned the sensor, installed new o-ring and its been fine but keeping an eye on it.
Yeah, I'd be pissed. I know from his posts here, and a PM to me, Ashnic is pissed. But jeez it's one freakin' bike out of the bunch. $hit happens.
I'd try to get something semi-long lasting out of the deal. Free or discounted maintenance perhaps. Maybe some kind of upgrade wether it's aesthetic or performance, Ashnic to choose. But you'll only get any of those things by being civil about it. And you'll only get them from the factory. The dealer doesn't have big enough pockets and really never was at fault, they didn't build the bike. I'd be trying to make sure I got to talk to the factory rep, and I'd choose my words carefully.
As far as the factory's liability goes, their only obligation is to make it right. Which is what they are doing with a new engine and a loaner bike. You may get a little more if you talk nicely to the right people. If they know you are a vocal member of a large forum, that can't hurt either, but threats and accusations will get you exactly nowhere.
I'd try to play it a bit calmer, like Ashnic is attempting to do.
I would demand some kind of compensation for your troubles. Simply getting a loaner bike to use why you wait on yours is nice, but is not acceptable IMHO. I would ask for the 5 year extended warranty for free or a refund on it if you bought it. Or free five thousand mile services for as long as you own the bike. I know, wishful thinking, but the OP got screwed hard.
There would be no asking at this point in the game, they'll pony up for the complete extended warranty and regular services till said warranty expires or they can take the bike back and I'd go on a very public crusade long and loud about it. With today's connected world and social media what it is even companies the size of harley have to be leary of it, a dealership could take a hell of hit with bad press over issues like this.
Granted they are jumping to make it right but the man dumped a sizable chunk of money on a product that should not be doing this and myself once the works done it's no longer a new bike it's a rebuilt bike, very much not acceptable.
Kills to me read these stories both here and several other tech forums I haunt but you poor guys have done me a huge favor, only reason I'm not in this club is nobody had the bike I wanted yet. Now I'm sidelined watching where all this is going.
Oh and for those said it's only one bike ? Far from it if you do serious digging around the net, mostly oil pumps but a seems to be a sizable number with head issues and oil passing by.
