I have an 09 Ultra, it has a very noticeable clatter especially at 2500 rpm.....I am considering the Rockouts. Anyone have personal experience with them? work?
They didn't get rid of all my noise, but they did get rid of some of it. Adjustable pushrods set .145" deep also got rid of some of it, and going back to conventional 20W50 oil got rid of a bit more.
Skid: did you do the install yourself or have someone do it? Also, what did it require removing in order to get into the heads? Gas tank or could you just prop that up?
I'm sure they will chime in. I have a set but haven't installed them, I'm doing an engine build in a month or so and I'll do them then. Many sing their praises, and they are affordable. Can't hurt.
I have them, installed myself. They eliminated about 90% of top end noise. Very easy install. If you think you can get the covers off without removing the tank, go for it. Easier for me to just take the tank off. Ride it til it's almost out of gas though, that'll help reduce the mess.
Yeah I did my own install, I've done it on my bikes, and a few friends. Usually can be done by lifting the tank a bit or sometimes without. But honestly it is far faster and easier to just pull the tank, you can see and reach everything so much easier that way...
My Hogtunes amp and speakers took care of any engine noise I had. A good set of slip on mufflers works well too.
There are many rave reviews here on the rockouts. Search and you will find multiple threads. I'm sure they are a nice product and work for many but I personally don't see the need. My indy recently rebuilt my 08 RKC at 112,000 and put the same original rocker assembly back in it. All was still well within spec and minimal wear. Twin cams are noisy and if you chase noises, you will be in a never ending battle. Fix one, then you hear another.
As previously mentioned, conventional oil will also quiet it down if you are currently using synthetic. My indy recommends dino oil.
FYI - I am by no means an expert and this is all just my opinion from a guy that rides almost every day since I bought my first HD 12 years ago.
