Default Good Project

For those of you out there who like to dabble with your bike, here's one maintenance item that very few owners ever do and makes a big difference. If you have a lift (gotta have a lift), lift your bike and remove the nut that holds the jiffy stand together. Detach the spring and lift out the assembly making sure you remember which way the cam goes. Clean both the shaft of the jiffy stand and the socket where it rides with solvent. Lube the shaft with your favorite waterproof grease (wheel bearing grease works pretty well or white grease), reassemble and then reconnect the spring. The spring will test your strength - it's a bit of a booger to reattach, but, you'll eventually get it. Now, notice your jiffy stand no longer squeeks and how easily it goes up and down - this needs to be done at least once a year or more often if you ride in the rain.

I used to do that, but, removing it cleans off the residue that causes rust to form there. I guess unless you're planning on keeping the bike for a long time would it be really necessary. I'm **** about such things.

Yes - that's correct. The part's cheap (relatively speaking) and takes a couple of seconds to install. Mine still works just fine after a little over 2 years since new.
