Default Frame Strength????????????

Good afternoon everyone,

I am looking at buying a 1998 HD Electra glide standard. the bike is a repo but it has some damage also. the front forks and the front fender have to be replaced. i was wondering if anyone could tell me how strong the neck of the frame is. i am only looking at pictures of the bike and i cant ask any questions to the seller because this bike is up for auction. I want to buy the bike but i am worried about the frame.

thanks

Right up my line as I've been an Appraiser for M\C's for over 20 yrs & own my own M\C Shop in the '80's...

1st off that is one of the strongest part of the frame

Frame damage... You will see a break\crack in the paint if the frame was tweeked... If so Most frames can be straightened - Far less $$$ then replacing... Cost is normally under $500.00

Unless your getting a KILLER DEAL on a '98 & you haven't see the Putt... Caution should be taken - But if it's something you want... Get it!!!

Bignastie - Is the bike considered "totaled"? If so, you should do some homework on what it will take to get it titled in your state. You may be looking at having to deal with a salvage title.

So-Cal - With your expertise, Would you be willing to bet there is more that needs replacing besides just the forks and fender? I've often thought about getting a damaged bike and bringing it back to life, but don't know the subtle nuances of crash damage to know if I'm getting in over my head or not.

If you can get it for 1000 dollars, buy it. If anything else you could get a different frame and do whatever you want to it.

$1,000.00 - KILLER - The Motor\Trans alone is worth $1,500.00+ USED & RUNNING!!!

I have bought many Totaled bikes and would strip them clean & re-built them - If the Frame was good I would register it in Arizona (have property there) If the frame was trashed I would get a aftermarket frame and register it as a New Build in California...

$1,000.00 [sm=forgetit.gif]I would guess the auction has not gone very far yet. I have beenbuying on insurance auctions for a while and have rebuilt a bike I got from one. 2000 FLHT standard. So real close to the one you are looking at. It seems like everyone is getting into rebuilding bikes and the darn prices have almost doubled!!!

Anyway now that I have vented my fustration with insurance auctions.... If you can get that bike for a grand DO IT!!! I would agree with the other fella that the frame is prob OK. At most you would be looking at tripple trees, Tubes and sliders. All on E-bay used for reasonable money. And heck if you grt it for a grand and want to make a quick grand Ill give you 2 for it. I really had a good time rebuilding the last one and learned a ton doing it.

Good luck
JT

look at the neck, and the side plates that reinforce the neck to the frame. they should be flat.

Picture what wold happen say if the bike hit something head on... the wheel tries to come back towards the engine in a clockwise direction... this will cause those side plates to bow out.

As for the neck being tweaked one way or the other because of a side impact, take a good look at the tires..looking for wear on one side more than another.

Other tnan Compu Tracking it thats the best visual inspection.
