Time for new tires. Running 402's on it now(2nd set 08 ultra). I'm thinking of going with the AMERICAN ELITES. Who has made the switch from 402's to the AM ELITES. how many miles are you getting from a set? (20,000 miles off the 402's). And your pros and cons of the AM. ELITES.
I switched from the Metzler 888's. I could not be happier with the AE's. I've only had them on for 600-800 miles but they are the best handling tire I've had on my '07 Ultra hands down. Obviously I can't speak to longevity but my tire guy said I should expect no less than what I got from the 888's.
On my 08 ultra i switched from 402's to american elites.i could not be more happy. I ride two up alot and we travel with luggage alot.if you got 20,000 out of 402's your doing good.I was lucky to get 8,000 out of mine .so far the elites have out lasted the 402's.my elites have just under 8000 on them and still have over half tread left..they also handle the tar snakes like there not there. steel deck bridges are also easy to cross.the 402's you had better be hanging on.the only thing the 402's have over the elites is heavy rain.in heavy rain the 402's hold slightly better(softer rubber in the center) so that means slow down a bit in heavy rain,i guess thats what we should do anyway.when i bought mine they were about the same price(last year)i'm not sure about now .to be honest with ya most tires new handle nice its at that 50% worn mark that makes or brakes a tire.
I recently switched from 16" www 402s to 18" American Elites and am very happy with the ride quality and handling. I'm not a long distance rider and my 402s were original to my 2010 FLHRC and only had 11K miles before I changed them out last month, so I can't comment on longevity.
But performance wise the Elites work very well for me.
I did go to lower profile tires which definitely had a positive impact on backroad handling, but even on the freeway the Elites feel great and are confidence inspiring. Very happy with my choice -- I also considered Michelins and Avons.
Got about 10000 on mine and the tread is still looking good. Love the handling. When I bought mine I had to give up the wide whitewalls as they did not offer them in the AE tires, but now they do, so I would say they are the perfect set of tires.
Thanks for the input. J&P has a sale on them,$278+tax. And Dunlop offering $40 rebate. Question? I replaced inner tubes and rim strips last time [ 2 yr ago]. Need to replace again?

Need to? Eh, maybe not but I always did at each tire change
P.S. I have about 6,300 on my first set of American Elites and they still look practically new
Currently running the 19" AE on the front of my Road King and very happy with it after 16K + miles with plenty of life left to it. Have the Metzeler 888 on the rear of that with the trip 8's front and rear of the Road Glide. No complaints and quite happy with both. Also like the Dunlop E3 and have ran a number of those tires no complaints. Went with the AE as it was the only 19" I could find when I put the Enforcer wheel on the RK. Will probably run the AE again. Great handling in all conditions with excellent tread life.
