Default New guy, need suggestions

First off, great site. Lots of useful info....sometimes too much.

I just recently bought a 08 Ultra Classic 105 Anniversary with 110K on the clock. Seller claimed engine was done around 75K. Runs good, but long in the tooth. Would probably be doing this anyway.
I want to replace the engine and drivetrain. Am going to go with a Baker 6 or 7 speed trans
My question is what should I do for engine, clutch, and primary? Looking for reliable so I don't have to tear into it in a few years, but I wont begrudge a little more power with it.
Looking to spend about 7-10K for everything if that helps.

Endless options. There are a few companies that sell upgrade crate motors. Harley can do a long block exchange, SE upgrades etc. do some research and decide what you want and how much work you want to do yourself.
Mid your block and crank are still solid, you could put a performance big bore kit on with cams etc. might be a cheaper way to go.

Flstcjay has the right idea. 7-10K is a pretty good budget. Crate motors are an option but with those miles in a rebuild your crank and block should be good to go. Endless options but with your budget you can do a BB, tranny and finish up a stage 3 or 4 build with the leftover money and if you shop smart. Might even save a few bucks and come out ontop with a built engine that when taken care should last another 100K miles. Talk to your local shop or Indy on labour rates and start buying parts from there if it was me.

110k miles i would not be putting any thing on that crank. long block would be my choice.

Lots of possibilities here but as mentioned above, with 110k on that crank I’d be swapping it for another. Although there’s something to say about it having that durability.

If your main concern is reliability I wouldn't touch it. If it hasn't been beat on it should be good to go for a while longer. Just keep an ear out for funny noises. In my experience most Harley mechanical problems are owner induced.

Ditch that 66 tooth rear pully and put a 68 on there or leave it and go down a tooth or 2 it'll be a whole different ride. 08 touring had screwed up gearing 6th gear was useless under 75mph.

Just an update. I took apart the bike to fix a few small things and found a Thunder Max on there. So I now know some kind of work had been done.
Now my thinking is to ride out the season here and do the major surgery this winter.

Now to get rid of those horrible Yaffe 16" apes

Wise choice, you can pop by here and do some research on your countless engine options. Do that often, otherwise you risk finding yourself with a bike in bits and nobody with spare capacity over the winter to do your engine for ya! Also call in the Tech Engine section, where you will find engine-specific matters discussed in detail, also a few builders worth contacting.

'Replace' is a big word! Buying a crate aftermarket engine and complete transmission is a darned expensive business and probably unnecessary. A Baker gearset will fit your transmission casing and your engine can be rebuilt, to give a serious boost in performance. Primary will need replacement parts and probably an upgrade, but I suggest you seek out an engine shop and ask their advice on that. Also budget to have a proper dyno-tune done. Hillside Cycles and Fuel Moto both have a good reputation in here, as starting points for your research.

Hello and welcome.
If I may play devils advocate.
You have an 08 with 110k miles.
You have set a $7-$10k budget.
Crate engines, for nothing particularly special, start around $5000. A Baker 7 speed is around $3000. Then you have things like the primary, clutch, rotar and stator, bearings, gaskets, belts and chains, etc. I think $2000 would be very conservative an estimate there. You're now at the top of your budget for engine/trans parts alone. What's a fair price for labor on that?
Now let's talk about the rest of that 110k bike. There are shocks, front tubes, neck bearings, swing arm bushings, wheel bearings, brakes, etc that will all need attention sooner than later.
And that doesn't take into account the fun stuff like bars, seat, LED lighting, pipes, air cleaner, etc.
All on a bike you bought for how much?
One that might be worth $15k with all the new stuff.
And I've seldom seen a project like that go as planned and stay in budget...

My point is you might consider riding it like it is for a while, sell it and take the money for the rebuild and buy a 2-3 year old garage queen with a few thousand miles.
