Default Changing control buttons

how hard is it to change out the hand control buttons? Does it require removal of the switches out of the housings to change the buttons ? Wondering if they can be removed and replaced without disassembly of the entire control.

Pre CANBUS I believe the individual switches can be replaced but it requires disassembly, cutting and soldering.
Post CANBUS, '14 and newer I believe the whole switch pack must be replaced.
I could be wrong on both counts...

If changing switch covers. Black to chrome. You can do it. Take your time. Caution: Some switches are spring loaded, for their return to normal. Remove switch slowly so spring does not pop out and land in never, never land.

You can change them out, just take your time. You will have to remove the switch housing cover, then you can remove the individual switch covers. Like already said, be careful of the spring ones, your turn signals, they have the springs. If you don't have a service manual, I recommend getting one.

Ride safe!

Red face

I changed two switches on my Sporty and that was a nightmare - I did eventually win the battle, but it was a long and bitter fight! So as suggested above, take your time, also pray to all your gods to get them on side.....

Also, I there are a couple very small screws holding the switch bracket to the housing, you will have to remove these. Be careful not to lose them and not to damage any wires. When putting them back in , it will be tricky routing the wires, use good judgement and don't force them in.

Ok, this thread has helped me a little on my issue, my throttle cable on my '04 FLHTCUI broke, bought new ones … but found out that I have everything for cruise control except for the switch on handlebars. (It was a Police bike, a previous owner switched out hand controls for a standard classic).

Purchased new cables, right hand lower switch housing & replacement switch. Disassembled it without issues, but reassembly is a PAIN! with the replacement switch a super small copper spring piece was in bag & as I pulled out the audio mode switch … copper spring type clip came out. Figured out wiring & where it pins out in harness.

As I'm trying to put the clamp in that holds the two screws & lower switches in … It's almost impossible to get it to align.

No installation instructions came with the replacement cruise switch & can't find a tech video anywhere.

Ant tips or tricks to reduce the frustration? Or a link to some sort of instructions? About to throw the towel in. Help.

I feel your pain. I installed the extended turn signal switches in my 04. What I thought would be a 10 minute project became more like a 10 hour project. I think I did it one housing per day.

Work in a clean, well lit area, where flying bits can be re-found.

As I recall, gravity would be your friend in very specific positions. By no means was everything done in an upright position. I think this was crucial on holding a few switches together. As in basically hold the switch together, upright on my finger tip, and lower the housing around it.

Dental picks and probes were my friend. With them I could hold wires down for their tiny clamps, and move them out of the way when inserting the next switch.

Some time spent on each switch individually, figure out the unique way it went in was important. From that I could figure out the build sequence. I don't think it was linear bottom up.

All this is recollection from several years ago. A job I wouldn't wish on anyone.
