Default Starter removal on 2010 Ultra Classic with Rinehart headers

Howdy all,

The starter clutch is going bad on my 2010 Ultra Classic. I searched the forums and found some posts that give good details on the replacement process but there is one difference with my bike I didn't think about until now. It has Rinehart True Duals on it and the rear exhaust pipe goes backwards across the oil dipstick instead of towards the front like the stock pipe does. Does anyone know if I will need to remove the rear exhaust pipe to get the starter out or could it be removed from the clutch side once it is unbolted?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

I removed mine from the clutch side on a 09 Ultra because I had a reverse gear lever in the way. It came out without hassle. you just need about 2 inch of space to clear the starter gear.

Thanks for the info Irish. I have no reason to pull the primary at this point so I wondered if it would have enough room to go out that way.

Are you sure you have True-Dual head pipes? I also have Rinehart True-Duals on my 2003 Ultra and the rear pipe comes right out and bends to the left right over the trans cover and has a hard mount that is secured with the starter bolts. The rear head pipe does not come anywhere near the oil dipstick. I can pull the primary cover without pulling the exhaust header but I do have to remove the header mount that fastens to the starter bolts. I pulled out the installation instructions and they show it this way. They also show the same mount but it goes in facing the opposite direction for your year model.

The exhaust is a complete Rinehart system and the pipes never connect to each other, but they come out both on the right side. The rear cylinder goes under the swingarm pivot and comes out at the clutch side saddlebag. The original owner gave me the stock Harley exhaust system when I bought the bike. Here are a couple of pics. Let me know what you think this system is called.

Must be a newer configuration. Mine don't look anything like that. I have never seen any of those...learn something new all the time!

Dang, I didn't want to be Extreme, that usually means trouble.

All I know is I had to buy a special $30 socket to be able to get the oil dipstick out. The transmission dipstick ain't any fun either. I will say though that I do not get heat from the exhaust. Maybe that's why they redesigned it. It seems to be pretty well built as well. I also like that it doesn't have that VW Beetle sound like the Screamin' Eagle system had.
