Default First Extended ESP

Purchased an ESP from Discount ESP in July of 2015. Jim Palmer was at the helm of Discount ESP at that time. Purchased a zero deductible plan that was issued through Cornerstone. Filed two claims on the Cornerstone plan with no issues, other than the dealer would not accept payment from them. Cornerstone promptly sent me the checks. In July of 2018, it was time to renew. I spoke with Jim and I could've renewed with Cornerstone, but he said that the First Extended Plan would be an "upgrade", so I switched. Jim is a great guy and I was confident he'd have my back if I had issues. Well, as you all know, when Boardtracker HD closed, Jim went with another ESP outfit. I just turned in my first claim with First Extended. The dealer said I needed an oil pump. The dealer called First Extended and was told they didn't cover oil pumps. I called First Extended and spoke with a very unprofessional young man, who I could hear typing on his keyboard for about 5 minutes, before he said to have the dealer call back, it should be covered. Dealer called back and spoke with a lady who verified it covered and ok'd repair. Oil pump installed and issue still there. Dealer said it needed lifters. The dealer had to submit the lifter repair and was told First Extended would "review" it and advise within 48 hours. The 48 hours were up yesterday. Dealer called again this morning and it is still under "review". Hopefully, this all works out, but for you guys that may have First Extended, it appears their claims processing can be a slow go.

I suspect the warranty company might push back on this "change" of diagnosis

I'm expecting that. In June of 2018 the same dealer replaced the lifters. I haven't gotten to ride much the past year. Those lifters probably have less than 6k on them.

I could see it going either way to be honest. I imagine First Extended will try to push back and the dealer will say whatever (because what do they care). However, there isn't always just one thing that is bad. The oil pump could be one issue (which in itself is a covered repair), then the lifters could be a separate issue (which would be covered as well). The tricky part is showing that they are two SEPARATE issues and not one causing the other - this is very important.

Was the oil pump bad and that consequently caused the lifters to not operate correctly and now the followers are bad too? If that is the case, the root cause (the oil pump in this case) would be covered, but the consequential damage (the lifters and/or the followers) would not be covered because the First Extended plan only covers the initial failure, not consequential damages.

@Jim Palmer - MotorcycleAgent.com is still on the forum quite a bit. Since you're name dropping him, maybe send him a PM or see if he chimes in here.

I'm betting it isn't the lifters then. Tell them not to replace them unless they will pay for them if the ESP won't cover the replacement.

When they first said the oil pump wasn't covered, I did reach out to Jim. He responded, but I had already had that issue settled by the time he responded. Right now, I'm just going to sit tight and see what happens. Not much riding weather anyway. Thanks.

All is well. Dealer called and ESP is picking up 100% of repairs. They may be a little slow, but can't
complain about results.

Lazybee,

Sorry to hear about your experience. First Extended is an excellent company; however, when a claim is made outside of the selling dealership, the claim needs to be authorized by Boardtracker H-D. Now that this store is closed, this can prove to be difficult. This requirement was one of the main reasons I had to make a change. This isn't the way an extended service plan claim should go.

I'm not longer affiliated with Discount ESP, so unfortunately can't help directly. I would recommend calling First Extended directly; there is no reason for a 48 hour wait.

Thanks, Jim, but as I posted, other than a slight delay, I am pleased with the outcome. Thanks for your response.

I am very sorry for you, as I have been put through the same situation as you, with the back and forth between the dealer and First Extended. I hope you get your motorcycle back soon.
The First Extended Plan is ANYTHING BUT an "upgrade". It's a terrible company with which to do business, from my experience. Jim Palmer sold these policies saying that they were just like the Harley extended Plan but cheaper. Nothing could be farther from the truth for the buyer of thee policies. Coverage package is not the same as Harley Plans. Harley offers far more coverage, and the "customer experience" is FAR SMOOTHER!! With the Harley Plan, there are no delays waiting for approvals, at least on most things. I'm sure there are limits to what Harley will allow to be fixed without prior approval, but generally dealers don't have to get approval for most repairs, from what I have experienced. If they do, the approval is VERY QUICK, unlike First Extended.

And based upon what Jim Palmer told, implied, inferred( whichever term you want) us about the Discount.ESP plans being "just like Harley's plan", and finding out it wasn't, I will not buy any extended warranty plan he sells in the future.
