Default Windscreen

Hi guys, new to the forum but not riding. I recently bought a 19 SGS and love it but my glasses wobble and shake all over the place. I know I need a taller windscreen I’ve been looking into freedom shields and clockwerks. My question is what’s the height you guys use. I’m 6’2” and slouch a little after riding for awhile. Sorry to beat the topic to death for I’m sure it has been any feedback will b extremely helpful. Thanks Billl

Not easy to be precise about the best screen height, because your seated height could be several inches different to someone else of the same standing height. The SGS screen is more a custom feature, compared say with an Ultra, which is intended for long days in the saddle. By all means buy an aftermarket screen, but I suggest you visit your local dealer and take a look at other Touring models, which should enable you to decide a more suitable height for you.

As a rule of thumb, optimum height is said to about nose high, so you can see clearly over the top of it. That's the way I've been doing it for around 50 years of riding behind windshields and fairings!

The one in my sig picture is a Memphis Shades 6.5" Spoiler. I'm 5'11" and it comes up to about my chin or mouth. Personally I like to look over the windshield rather than through it. My suggestion would be get one that has a recurve at the top that will direct the air up and over you. Most aftermarket companies make a few styles with a recurve.

This is a Klock Werks 8.5", and I'm 5' 12". Works great.

I bought mine from freedom. There is a big difference in other windshields, you cant go wrong with them. Also on the freedom web site there is a guide at the bottom of the home page that tells you how to pick the appropriate size.

I'm 6 foot even. I put a 7" Freedom Shield on my 18 SGS. Vast improvement over the OE shield, no more rattling glasses! I can easily see over the top, even when slouched. I'm fairly confident that I could also easily see over the top of a 10". Just my opinion, but I felt the additional 3 inches of the 10" would take away the stealthy look of the SGS, and I'm pleased with the outcome.

You also may be experiencing the air flowing from under the tank area. Many have this and no windshield will fix the problem.

Another thing to consider is where is the air coming from? Next time you ride and you notice your glasses/head/helmet shake, take your left arm and hold it horizontally across your chest and see if that reduces or eliminates the shake. If it does, then you have air coming from below. If not... more than likely from top or side of windshield. I like my windshield to be around my chin area.... I like to look over the screen. If you take trips and have a tall windshield, you will find that bugs and rain will limit your view.... then you will try to clean at a gas station and end up with scratches!! There is good advice here...this topic has been brought up before...do a search to gather more info.

edit..... if you do have wind coming from below (I did) a pair of ugly fangs or some other wind deflector mounted on the forks should eliminate that....

What he said! I have the glasses rattle if I use my Klock Werks 6.5 inch or 8.5 inch. I had it with the stock windshield. I have air flowing up from below the tank area. Have added the between the fork baffle, and the wings on the lower side of the fairing. It helped some, but did not solve problem. I have done lots of research on this and it seems the only cure is the fork mounted fangs. Just cant bring myself to go there.
