Spray throttle cleaner recommendations
I have a 2001 Road King Classic with fuel injection and a Magnetti Marrelli throttle body ... and the throttle sticks a bit ... I have read that your not supposed to use throttle spray cleaned on Harleys because of the sensors ... is there a spray throttle cleaner that IS recommended and safe to use? Thanks for the help.
I use CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaner everytime I do my scheduled maintenance and I've never had an issue, you can pick it up at near every auto parts store. How do you know it's the throttle plate and not caused by cables or something else in the control housing near your throttle tube?? Could be something very simple such as the throttle lock screw was turned in a bit too much. Not trying insult your intelligence at all here, just offering up some suggestions.
There is a chance it isn't the sensor but the twist grip itself. Try removing the twist grip, clean the handlebar and the inside of the grip and apply a very thin coat of grease to handlebar and reinstall the grip. I have no experience with MM throttle sensor but testing it for binding should be much the same as for the current versions. remove the grip and try twisting the end of the sensor by hand or with a tool, such as channel lock pliars using a very light squeeze and rotate the sensor. If you feel it binding, the cleaner might help but in my case, replacement was the only choice that worked. Have no idea if MM sensors are still available. A conversion to carburetor and cable throttle may be in your future.

TBW started in 08 (or was in 07 with the 96 and 6spd?)
What do you mean by "sticks a bit" ?
A common cause of slow throttle return or sticky throttle return is caused by the throttle grip.
Take a look at grips...are they factory original?
Sometimes folks will install new grips but then place the clamp portion either pulling towards bike center line or pushing towards outside and that causes a stick point at grip.
That stick point causes a failed return.
It would be unusual or less likely for throttle body to sticky.
Of coarse, i would imagine that you reviewed the throttle friction friction screw (The plastic star shape thing that locks throttle)
A throttle pull cable that has a lost a few strands near terminal ball at throttle sleeve could also cause a failed smooth return.
